DIVE THE COOLIDGE - VANUATU

(click "compatability view" if this page doesn't display well)

During World War II, Esperito Santo was a major allied base and rest & recreation facility for the troops. Vessels entering the harbour were required to wait outside the minefield guarding the harbour for a pilot to guide them through.

However, for some reason, the captain of the SS President Coolidge decided not to wait and hit a mine while trying to navigate the entrance. With a hole under the hull and taking water, he drove the ship up onto the beach where the crew and troops abandoned ship.

The cargo & stores are still on board and personal effects lay scattered along the corridors and companionways where the troops dropped them as they rushed to get off the ship. Over the years with storms and other disturbances, the President Coolidge settled into its present location just a few metres from the shore.

This wreck is most often explored as a shore dive. The top of the bow is within easy reach of open water divers while the stern is a favourite training area for technical divers.

The local dive guides have dived the wreck hundreds of times, and will guide you to the most spectacular and interesting parts of the wreck.
